Must-See-TV DVDs: August 12, 2009

Welcome to TVScreener.com‘s new weekly TV DVD round-up. Lots of great boob tube hitting DVD recently, so for our inaugural Must-See-TV DVD column, we’ll include this week’s releases, as well as highlights from the last couple of weeks …

MUST-SEE-TV DVD OF THE WEEK:
Designing Women: The Complete 2nd Season (Shout! Factory)
Details: The best part of season two: Anthony Bouvier (Meshach Taylor) and delightfully kooky Bernice Clifton (Alice Ghostley) were a regular part of the action. Guest stars included Scott Bakula, Gerald McRaney as Suzanne’s (Delta Burke) ex-hubby (McRaney and Burke would eventually marry) and Billy Baldwin.
TV Screener Tidbit: Surprisingly, though the show was frequently nominated for Emmys, it won only one: Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling for a Series for the season two episode “I’ll Be Seeing You.”

BEST OF THE REST:
90210: The Complete 1st Season (Paramount Home Entertainment)
Details: Didn’t love the first season as much as I hoped to, but it was cool to get an update on the original Beverly Hills 90210 gang, especially the news of Kelly’s offspring with babydaddy Dylan McKay. Plus, you have to give it up for any show that brings Shannen Doherty back to the tube.
Bonus Features: Commentaries, a set tour and featurettes on the music and fashion of The CW series

Adam-12: Season 3 (Shout! Factory)
Details: Season three of the Dragnet spin-off features the further adventures of senior LAPD officer Malloy (Martin Milner) and his protégé Jim Reed (Kent McCord). The series, created by Jack Webb, was also the first full-time writing gig for future A-Team creator Stephen J. Cannell.
TV Screener Tidbit: McCord later appeared as the father of Johnny Depp‘s Tom Hanson on 21 Jump Street. Seen in flashbacks, we learn that Hanson’s dad was also a policeman, who had been killed in the line of duty.

AND THE REST …
The City: Season 1 (Paramount Home Entertainment)

The Life and Times of Vivienne Vyle – Season 1 (BBC Video)

Life With Derek: The Complete 2nd Season (E1 Entertainment)

The New Detectives: Case Studies in Forensic Science – Season 4 (Timeless Media Group)

Pulling: The Complete 2nd Season (MPI Home Video)

The World’s Greatest Super Friends – The Lost Episodes (Warner Home Video)

THE BEST OF RECENT MUST-SEE-TV DVD RELEASES:
Flight of the Conchords: The Complete Second Season (HBO Home Entertainment)
Details: Jemaine as a prostitute, the guys performing to shopping bags and guest turns by Mary Lynn Rajskub, Kristen Wiig, Art Garfunkel (?!) and Patton Oswalt … just a few slices of the fun of season two (the Emmy-nominated season two!) and the reason why we’re all hoping there will be a season three!
Bonus Features: Deleted scenes, outtakes, a documentary feature and Dave’s pawn shop commercials

Project Runway: The Complete Fifth Season (Genius Products)
Details: Who can forget Leanne and her wavy dresses and obsession with all things “or-gahnic,” Kenley and her hand-painted dresses and penchant for ticking everyone off and Korto, the fan fave, whose season finale necklace I still obsess about?
Bonus Features: Extended episodes and a “WEAR Is the Winner Now?” featurette

Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (Universal Home Entertainment)
Details: Whole series, in one box, with a cool collectible figurine
Bonus Features: More than 70 hours of ’em

G.I. Joe – A Real American Hero: Complete Collector’s Set (Shout! Factory)
Details: The complete animated series, with lots of collectible goodies (like flash drive dog tags), in its own footlocker.
Bonus Features: It comes in its own footlocker.

Psych: The Complete Third Season (Universal Home Entertainment)
Details: One of TV’s best bromances kicked it up a notch with season three, which included the return of Gus’ parents (Phylicia Rashad and Keith David) in a great Christmas episode, guest appearances by Gary Cole, Alan Ruck, Justine Bateman, Mykelti Williamson, Ally Sheedy, Jonathan Silverman and Cybill Shepherd (as Shawn’s mom) and a new girlfriend (Rachael Leigh Cook) for Shawn.
Bonus Features: Deleted scenes, gag reels, audio commentaries, video commentaries and podcast commentaries

Monk: Season 7 (Universal Home Entertainment)
Details: Includes “Mr. Monk’s 100th Case!” (the show’s 100th episode) and a cool list of guest stars: Sarah Silverman, David Strathairn, Brad Garrett, Eric McCormack, John Turturro, Hector Elizondo and Andy Richter.
Bonus Features: Video commentaries and a featurette on the making of the “Mr. Monk Makes the Playoffs” episode

Mad Men: Season 2 (Lionsgate Home Entertainment)
Details: The Emmy darling got even better, and definitely darker, in its second season, as Don and Betty Draper strayed from their marriage (and she ended up with a surprising pregnancy) and Peggy dropped the bombshell of her own shocking pregnancy on Pete. Meanwhile, the Sterling Cooper gang prepared for a takeover by a British firm.
Bonus Features: Cast and crew commentaries on all 13 episodes, featurettes on the fashion of the era and the rise of female independence, historical video clips and cool shirt box packaging that pays homage to Don’s crisp white button downs.

The State: The Complete Series (Paramount Home Entertainment)
Details: The show and comedy group from which Reno 911!, Stella and Michael & Michael Have Issues sprang, finally on DVD. Worth the price of the set for the Barry and Levon pudding sketch alone.
Bonus Features: Commentaries, outtakes and cast interviews

AND …
Torchwood: Children of Earth (BBC Video)

Middleman: The Complete Series (Shout! Factory)

The Donna Reed Show: The Complete Second Season (Virgil Films and Entertainment)

Dollhouse: Season 1 (Fox Home Entertainment)

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5 (Universal Home Entertainment)

Charles in Charge: Season 5 (Virgil Films and Entertainment)

This American Life: Season 2 (Showtime)
