Yabba Dabba Anniversary: ‘The Flintstones’ Turn 50

Happy Anniversary to The Flintstones, the animated take on The Honeymooners, which premiered on ABC 50 years ago today. In honor of the fab ‘toon, 10 quick Flintstonian tidbits:

1 – There were a lot of celebs in Bedrock, including “Cary Granite,” “Ann-Margrock,” Perry Masonry” and, R.I.P., “Stony Curtis.”

2 – The show was originally called The Flagstones, but was changed to avoid confusion with the comic strip Hi and Lois, where the central family was the Flagstons.

3 – Weird Al Yankovic paid homage to The Flintstones with the hilarious song and video “Bedrock Anthem” (with the aid of Red Hot Chili Peppers tunes).

4 – Flintstones kiddie vitamins were introduced in 1968 and continue today in several varieties (and even include The Great Kazoo as a character). Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles cereal was introduced by Post in 1971, and, in 2010, a new spin-off flavor, Cupcake Pebbles, was introduced.

5 – The fam inspired a Custer, South Dakota theme park called Flintstones Bedrock City, where you can visit Fred and Wilma’s house, buy Flintstones merch and snack on Dino Dogs and Brontosaurus Burgers.

And, a clip from one of my fave Flintstones episodes, season one’s “In the Dough,” in which Fred and Barney dress up like Wilma and Betty to try to win a $10,000 baking contest for their wives (whipping up the “Upside Down FlintRubble Double Bubble Cake”) when the women come down with the measles. Fred and Barney make for incredibly unattractive women, but the scene where Barney plucks his eyebrows is priceless, not only for its giggle-worthiness, but also because it was nice to see guys, even animated ones, see what we girls go through in the name of beauty.
