Archives for Chuck

Potts Picks: Today’s Best TV – January 27, 2012

(ALL TIMES ET)

8PM | NBC – SERIES FINALE
Chuck
– The two-hour finale finds Chuck Bartowski going back to his past and relying on all his friends and family members to help secure his future with Sarah, against the evil Nicholas Quinn. Yeah, not expecting a lot of surprises, but at least this once-favorite show got a full five seasons to do its nerdy thing.

8PM | ABC
Shark Tank
– There’s a mini-theme going on tonight’s Tank: one entrepreneur pitches a cat portrait business (really), while the show revisits last season’s potty-training for cats business.

9PM | FOX
Fringe
– Mystery after mystery: Peter tries to track down a girl with the power to see what will happen in the future.

9PM | SUNDANCE – 2ND SEASON FINALE
Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys
Brent attends his mother’s funeral, which, obviously, has a major impact on him.

9PM | PBS
Great Performances: Tony Bennett: Duets II
– The special documents the making of Bennett’s Duets II album including performance with Michael Buble, Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga.

9PM | DIY – 10TH SEASON PREMIERE
Man Caves
– Go ahead … make any of the numerous he-should-be-living-in-a-cave post-72-day marriage jokes, but Kardashian ex Kris Humphries gets a man cave bedroom and lounge in tonight’s episode.

10PM | IFC
Portlandia
– Michelle and Brendan believe education is the key to success, so they go all out to make sure their son gets one … at a fancy preschool.

10PM | STARZ – 2ND SEASON PREMIERE
Spartacus: Vengeance
– Now that the slaves are free, Spartacus begins to feel the full weight of his responsibility as their leader.

10:30PM | IFC
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret
– Todd goes to drown his sorrows at a bar and gets caught up in a bachelorette party. Better than getting caught up in an episode of The Bachelorette, no?

Worth flipping to during commercials:
Gordo revisits some of the restaurants he’s helped (or has he?) in the past on Kitchen Nightmares (8PM, Fox);
– New America’s Most Wanted (9PM, Lifetime);
20/20 (10PM, ABC) unfolds the case of a real-life War of the Roses story, about a Connecticut man who kidnapped his ex-wife, held her hostage and burned down their beach home;
– It’s the fifth season finale of Deadly Women (10PM, ID);
– Back-to-back wedding planning events on Swanderosa (10 and 10:30PM, CMT).

Potts Picks: Today’s Best TV – January 20, 2012

(ALL TIMES ET)

8PM | ABC – 3RD SEASON PREMIERE
Shark Tank
– Love this show! Mark Cuban, he of the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks, in onboard for the new season, and will use his NBA-team-owning skills to help ferret out new entrepreneurs, including, in tonight’s season opener, a pitch from NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton, who teams with triathlete Dave Meyer to pitch a new water bottle business. Other projects pitched to the sharks: a celebrity ghostwriting business and an online funeral-planning business.

8PM | NBC
Chuck
– Penultimate episode, which is sad because it was once a great show, and sad because it has definitely not been one in its final season. The lame Nicholas Quinn storyline continues to play out and takes Sarah and Chuck to Japan, while John Casey has to make a potentially life-changing decision.

9PM | FOX
Fringe
– Peter’s still on the other side, where the alt-Fringe gang is faced with a serious new enemy.

9PM | NBC
Grimm
– Monroe gets an upsetting massage from the creatures. Oops, make that message from the creatures … message. Totally different storyline that would have been.

9:30PM | HBO – SERIES PREMIERE
On Freddie Roach
– The new reality series revolves around the titular Roach, a boxing trainer – now dealing with Parkinson’s – who operates from the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood. Filmmaker/actor Peter Berg directs the show, which covers Roach’s days as a boxer (which led to his Parkinson’s) all the way through his standing as the world’s top boxing trainer (Manny Pacquiao is among his clients).

10PM | IFC
Portlandia
– While Candance and Toni hold a book signing event, Irys and Spyke plan a wedding that will be anything but cookie cutter.

10 and 10:30PM | CMT
Swanderosa
– The Swan family live on a big Texas ranch, where they plan and host big, fancy weddings. Get it? Swans … they live on a ranch … like the Ponderosa … Swanderosa.

10:30PM | IFC
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret
– Todd mistakes a teddy bear for Alice’s ex-boyfriend. Oh yeah, he’s in the hospital and under a big dose of morphine at the time.

Worth flipping to during commercials:
– New America’s Most Wanted on Lifetime (9PM);
– On Girls Who Life Boys Who Like Boys (9PM, Sundance), things go well enough at Olivia’s big charity event, but then … drama;
– On Man Caves (9PM, DIY), a New Yorker who’s far from home wants a den that reminds him of a swanky NYC lounge.

And the late-night line-up:
The Late Show with David Letterman (11:35PM, CBS): Dana Carvey;
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (11:35PM, NBC): Ryan Seacrest, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson;
Jimmy Kimmel Live (12:05AM, ABC): Terrence Howard;
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (12:35AM, NBC): Joan Rivers;

8PM | ABC – SERIES FINALE
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
– Ty Pennington and crew have built more than 200 homes for deserving families in their nine seasons on the air, and as they, sadly, leave primetime as a regular series, they go out in a big, classy way: Building seven homes in seven days, a whole neighborhood, for families in tornado-ravaged Joplin, Missouri.

1PM | ABC – SERIES FINALE
One Life to Live
– The citizens of Llanview (Llanviewians?) bid daytime TV adieu, after more than 43 years on the air. Saddest of all: there will be just four daytime soaps left come Monday, and none filming in New York City.

8PM | NBC
Chuck
Bo Derek guest stars as … Bo Derek, and she factors into a mission that includes Morgan facing some blowback from his days as the Intersect. Meanwhile, after tonight, just two more weeks before Chuck and his pals ride off into that big Buy More in the sky.

9PM | CBS
CSI: NY
– A perfect family turns out to be anything but, which the CSI-ers discover while investigating a break-in at the fam’s home.

9PM | FOX
Fringe
– Peter heads off on a dangerous mission to the alt world, where he plans to confront Walternate.

9PM | NBC
Grimm

9PM | THE CW
Supernatural
– Dean is sent traveling, time traveling, back to 1944, where he is arrested by one Eliot Ness.

10PM | NGC
America’s Most Hated Family
– Documentarian Louis Theroux, who once spent and documented a summer with those Westboro Baptist Church folks in Kansas, revisits them for a week and finds out things have changed since last he visited. Oh, they’re still batshit wackadoo, but now the younger members have started to leave the flock, as the rest of them wait for the end of the world and continue to spew hate at pretty much everyone who isn’t one of their own.

10PM | CBS
Blue Bloods

– It’s the one you’ve been waiting for: Doug and Claire obsess much over Battlestar Galactica.

10PM | NETWORK – 10TH SEASON PREMIERE
Real Time With Bill Maher
Herman Cain is among the guests, though Jon Stewart has pretty much wring all the funny out of that opportunity.

10:30PM | IFC
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret
– Todd tries to get Alice a job at her favorite restaurant and … well, you know.

Worth flipping to during commercials:
– A teenage girl abandons her newborn baby at the clinic on A Gifted Man (8PM, CBS);

– Percy threatens to get all destructive with Division unless Amanda lets him go on Nikita (8PM, The CW);

Potts Picks: Today’s Best TV – January 6, 2012

(ALL TIMES ET)

8PM | NBC
Chuck
– Last week’s episode was so sweet and awesome, in a season two or three kinda way, that it almost redeemed this disappointing final season of Chuck. Here’s hoping tonight’s episode continues that vibe, as Casey meets up with Vebanski (guest star Carrie-Anne Moss) again, and the newly not-baked Jeff starts to make some connections about the odd happenings at the Buy More.

– Is a stalker the culprit when a cage fighter is murdered? The CSIs are on the case.

9PM | THE CW

10PM | IFC – 2ND SEASON PREMIERE
Portlandia
Andy Samberg guests in the opener, as a mixologist who catches the eye of Carrie.

10:30PM | IFC – 2ND SEASON PREMIERE
The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret
– The title of the season premiere says it all: “Todd’s Terrible Day Ends and His Next Terrible Day Begins.”

Worth flipping to during commercials:
– New America’s Most Wanted on Lifetime (9PM);
– On Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys (9PM, Sundance), Brent’s behavior leads Olivia to a major decision, while Peter has a talk with his daughter about whether or not she’s being bullied at school;
Infested! (9PM, Animal Planet) … totally must-watch-TV, but totally skeevy at the same time with all the creepy-crawlies;
Deadly Women (10PM, ID) is also about vengeance-motivated murders;

(ALL TIMES ET)

9PM | BRAVO – 3RD SEASON PREMIERE
Real Housewives of New Jersey
– Hard to believe, but the Joisey girls may be wishing Danielle was back after they experience the new cast additions, both relatives of Teresa. In tonight’s premiere, the newbies (Kathy and Melissa) are introduced when Teresa and her family attend a christening. They arrive late (as usual), and that sets off a throwdown that could rival the great table-flipping incident of season 1.

8PM | NBC – 4TH SEASON FINALE
Chuck
– Can the team stop Vivian before she destroys Chuck and Sarah’s wedding? Now that the show will return for a 13-episode season next year, we may have to wait until then to find out … the episode is called “Chuck Versus the Cliffhanger,” after all.

8PM | FOX
House

9:30PM | CBS – 1ST SEASON FINALE
Mike & Molly
– Mike wigs when Peggy’s new boyfriend asks if he plans to marry Molly (Melissa McCarthy). PS – Still haven’t warmed up to M&M, but MM, show star McCarthy, is the breakout star and major scene stealer in the new chick flick Bridesmaids.

10PM | ABC – 3RD SEASON FINALE
Castle
– Beckett finds a surprising tie to her mother’s killer when a hit man with key info on the murder escapes.

10 and 10:30PM | THE HUB

– So much to love about tonight’s back-to-back eps: Not only are they the installments where Alex meets girlfriend Ellen, but it’s also when Michael J. Fox meets future real-life wife Tracy Pollan, and the episodes feature one of the all-time great sitcom musical moments, the introduction of Billy Vera & the Beaters‘ “At This Moment.” Remember?

10PM | CBS – 1ST SEASON FINALE

– When McGarrett gets his hands on some major evidence against Wo Fat, the crime lord makes it his mission to destroy Five-O.
