All the tube news that’s fit to surf …
- The Dexter season four finale earned the show its best ratings ever (up a whopping 71 percent versus the season three finale), but season five will carry on without longtime Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips, who quit the show to spend more time with his family.
- More good ratings news: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s fifth season, which wrapped last Thursday, was the show’s highest-rated season ever.
- The New York Times has scoop on the ninth season of The Biggest Loser, which premieres on NBC on Jan. 5 and will include the first contestant who’ll start the show weighing more than 500 pounds.
- We’re all sick of hearing about Tiger Woods and his ever-growing list of dalliances, but Yahoo! Sports has a fun round-up of video clips of some of the best late-night TV humor related to the scandal. You have to love Jon Stewart’s “Newzak.”
- Could self-adhesive gift wrap (SUCH a good idea!) be the next big product from the company that gave us the As Seen on TV classic, the PedEgg?
- Tough Love mother-and-son matchmakers JoAnn and Steven Ward are starring in a VH1 spin-off series, where they’ll put couples who are about to get engaged through a boot camp to see if they’re really right for each other.
- Side effect of the recession: Not surprisingly, more people are staying home and watching TV.
- Nickelodeon has ordered 26 new episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants.
- Showtime will debut the final season of The Tudors in April, and they’ll follow it up with another family saga, about shipping and railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt and his wealthy relatives. PS – Check out the new Tudors videogame.
- NBC has announced its midseason sked, which includes a premiere date for the new season of Celebrity Apprentice: March 14.
- Is this enough reason to tune in to the painfully boring 90210 remake: Gilmore Girls‘ Luke, a.k.a. Scott Patterson will guest star? Hmmmm … Pretty much any GG alum is tops in my book, but 90210 is a really lame show.
- Two sad cancelations: Flight of the Conchords and On the Air with Alexa Chung.
- Gossip Girl, the comic book? Uh huh, and it actually sounds kinda cool.
- And tonight in primetime: It’s part one of the So You Think You Can Dance season finale at 8PM ET on Fox; The Waltons papa Ralph Waite pops in as Gibbs’ daddy on NCIS (8PM, CBS); ABC replays A Charlie Brown Christmas (8PM); Cookalong live with Gordon Ramsay: Cookalong Live (9PM, Fox), in which the grumpy chef cooks a meal, live, and invites the home audience to cook along with him (recipes and shopping list are at the show’s Website); Kelso says goodbye to Ted and Gooch on Scrubs (9PM, ABC); Linda sells a children’s cook on Better Off Ted (9:30PM, ABC); Natalie continues to be a bee-otch-y hot mess on The Bad Girls Club (10PM, Oxygen); Alicia Keys celebrates the release of her new CD with a concert on Fuse (10PM); New episode of Teen Mom on MTV (10PM); TBS debuts its annual Funniest Commercials of the Year special (10PM), hosted by Weeds star Kevin Nealon; and on The Good Wife (10PM, CBS), has Alicia run into a racist judge?

It’s Always Sunny fans, check out Vanity Fair.com’s fun interview with acting/producing great and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Danny DeVito, who talks about getting naked in the show’s Christmas special, his infamous limoncello-infused appearance on The View and his safety word. Trust me, just read it.
BTW, did you catch that preview for next week’s Sunny season finale (Dec. 10, 10PM ET, FX), with DeVito’s Frank in skinny jeans? Did it remind anyone else of the episode of Seinfeld where Kramer tries to prove to Jerry that he’s still fit and trim by wearing too-tight pants? They don’t call Sunny “Seinfeld on crack” for nothing … can’t wait for the episode, even if it does mean no new Sunny eps ’til next summer.

HOORAY! We have our winners:

Check the deadline to enter for each day’s giveaway, as, again, each giveaway will run for a week.
Now, the fun part. To kick off the It’s a Very TVScreener.com Christmas 25-Day Giveaway, we’ve got a very appropriate DVD: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: It’s a Very Sunny Christmas. This direct-to-DVD release – it’s not airing on FX (and when you see it, you’ll know why) – finds The Gang celebrating the holidays as only they can, which means it involves a bloody Santa, a naked Frank, flashbacks to when Charlie, Mac, Dennis and Sweet Dee were kiddies and a surprisingly excited recipient of a Cabbage Patch Doll.
The hilarious story unfolds as Charlie and Mac try to plan a holiday celebration at Paddy’s, while Frank taunts Dee and Dennis with their dream gifts – which he buys for himself. We find out some interesting things about the Paddy’s crew’s past – suffice it to say we learn the origin of one of Charlie’s favorite recreational habits – and the whole thing wraps up with what, by Sunny measures, is actually kind of a sweet moment.
The DVD also includes deleted scenes with the young Charlie and Mac, a Sunny sing-a-long and a behind-the-scenes featurette. In short, though it’s all about Christmas, the Sunny special is more like a valentine to fans who love these crazy characters.
And to enter for a chance to win one of two copies of the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: It’s a Very Sunny Christmas DVD, remember:
- Leave a comment on this post, with your name, your all-time favorite holiday TV special and an e-mail address where we can reach you
- Deadline to enter to win a copy of the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: It’s a Very Sunny Christmas DVD is November 24 at 8PM ET (according to recorded comment time)
- The winner will be chosen by random, using Random.org’s Random Number Generator
- The winner will be announced on the evening of November 24, as an update to this post
Good luck, Sunny fans, and stay tuned for the rest of our It’s a Very TVScreener.com Christmas 25-Day Giveaway!

All the tube news that’s fit to surf …
- Edward Norton and Elizabeth Banks guest star on Wednesday’s Modern Family episode, and Minnie Driver will pop up as the next big guest star, playing an old friend of Claire’s (Julie Bowen) in January.
- Just awesome: Craig Ferguson and his Late, Late Show has topped Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night in the ratings for the first time. The ever-charming Ferguson is the one late-night show you should be DVR-ing if you’re not staying up to watch it every night.
- Will Lou Dobbs check in at Fox News now that he’s quit CNN? Perhaps we’ll find out when he gives his first post-resignation TV interview to Bill O’Reilly Monday night (8PM, Fox News).
- Heads up Twilight-ers: Taylor Lautner (squeal!) is guesting on The Jay Leno Show Monday (11/16, 10PM ET, NBC), and he’s bringing a never-before-seen clip of The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
- The Gosselins are out at TLC, and Cake Boss is getting their timeslot. That’s a scenario where we’re all winners, no?
- Arrested Development dad Jeffrey Tambor will star in Rex Is Not Your Lawyer with former Doctor Who David Tennant. Tambor will play the therapist to Tennant’s Rex, an attorney whose panic attacks force him to coach his clients to represent themselves.
- Alyssa Milano has signed on to guest star as Castle’s (Nathan Fillion) ex-girlfriend on ABC’s Castle.
- The Hollywood Reporter has scoop on how the entrepreneurs from Shark Tank are doing. Love that show.
- Here’s hoping ABC’s Charlie’s Angels remake will be more fun than The CW’s Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210 redos.
- If you’re in New York City, check out the Barneys holiday windows, which feature an homage to Saturday Night Live, with papier-mâché versions of Pat, Roseanne Roseannadanna, the Coneheads and Brian Fellows.
- The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Christmas special, which hits DVD on Tuesday (11/17): Naked Danny DeVito. Seriously. And TVScreener.com will be giving away copies of the DVD as part of our “It’s a Very TVScreener.com Christmas: 25 Days of Giveaways” uh, giveaways, which launches Monday, so stay tuned.
- Forget dancing. Next Tuesday’s Dancing With the Stars episode (9PM, ABC) will feature performances by Alicia Keys, Leona Lewis and Gibb brothers Barry and Robin (though sadly, not the Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon versions of them).
- And this weekend in primetime: SATURDAY: John Mayer On the Record with Fuse (9PM ET) features an interview with the singer, whose new CD, Battle Studies, drops Tuesday, the same night his NYC concert airs live on Fuse; and Mad Men’s January Jones hosts a new Saturday Night Live (11:30PM, NBC), with musical guest Black Eyed Peas. On SUNDAY: The Prisoner miniseries remake premieres on AMC (8PM); Tough Love season 2 premieres on VH1 at 9PM; the fantastic History Channel series WWII in HD debuts at 9PM; Seinfeld and Funkhouser become friends on the penultimate Curb Your Enthusiasm of the season (9PM, HBO); and there’s a new episode of My Fair Wedding with David Tutera on WE (10PM).
There’s a scene where (Da Maniac) takes a helmet out of his station wagon, and it has barbed wire all over it, and I inadvertently hit Charlie in the groin with it.
