The Betty White ‘SNL’ Promo: She Liked It, So She Put a Ring on It

As usual, pure awesomeness from Betty White in this promo spot for her much-anticipated May 8 hosting gig on Saturday Night Live. She’s a genius … seriously, who has better comedic timing than Betty White???

‘SNL’: John Mulaney on Girl Scout Cookies

Last night’s Saturday Night Live: meh. Actually, less than meh … it was pretty bad, hands down one of the worst of the season, save Weekend Update.

In particular: current SNL writer/former Best Week Ever (sigh … RIP BWE) commentator John Mulaney, who visited Weekend Update to share his frustrations with the challenging pursuit of trying to buy Girl Scout cookies. Fan reaction at EW.com included someone nominating Mulaney as the next SNL cast member, which I second.

By the way, if you have the chance to see Mulaney live, take it. His entire stand-up performance is fantastic, from the Girl Scout cookie bit to an even more hilarious take on Law & Order:

Jon Hamm Returns to ’30 Rock’ … With his Fellow Jamaican Receptionists?

The Mad Men star returning to 30 Rock, with Jason Sudekis and Dean Winters? That’s more awesome than Don Cheadle on a bed of rice!

That reference, of course, is a nod to one of this season’s best 30 Rock episodes, “Anna Howard Shaw Day,” which featured that trio of actors as Liz Lemon’s (Tina Fey) ex-boyfriends, and, in a Liz hallucination, that trio of actors playing Jamaican receptionists working in her dentist’s office and gossiping about their Don Cheadle fantasies.

Well, good news: In the May 13 episode of 30 Rock, Hamm and Winters return to play Liz exes Drew and Dennis, who she visits in hopes of sparking a reunion so she’ll have a date for the wedding of another of her exes, Floyd (Sudekis).

In the same ep, Michael Sheen also returns as Liz’s alleged “Future Husband,” while Elizabeth Banks and Julianne Moore also return as part of Jack’s (Alec Baldwin) love triangle. And Tracy (Tracy Morgan)? He enlists Kenneth’s (Jack McBrayer) help in his never-ending quest for the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards).

Good times.

All the tube news that’s fit to surf …

Crystal Bowersox on last night’s American Idol? Wow.

– Not only is Betty White hosting Saturday Night Live on May 8, but her musical guest will be Jay-Z. Be prepared to fall in love with Betty White, hip hop fans.

– The Daily Beast interviews Al Pacino about his HBO movie You Don’t Know Jack, which premieres Saturday night (8PM ET). Pacino plays “suicide doc” Jack Kevorkian, and it truly is his best performance in years and another great made-for-TV flick from HBO.

– If you’re planning on throwing a Lost finale party on May 23, make sure you have plenty of snacks and libations on hand: ABC is planning five hours of Lost-themed programming that night, including a two-hour recap special, the two-hour finale and Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost, an hour-long special that will feature Lost showrunners Carlton Cuse and Damon Lidelof, as well as several cast members.

Kelsey Grammer is among the backers of a new right-wing TV network, which will feature shows like a conservative comedy series and Running, a reality show that will follow six people running for political office for the first time.

Glee fans, cancel all plans for May 18. That’s when the Joss Whedon-directed episode of the show airs. The episode also includes Neil Patrick Harris guest starring as Will Shuester’s high school rival, as well as guest turns by Molly Shannon and Idina Menzel.

– Don’t hassle The Hoff: David Hasselhoff‘s doing a good thing by making a return appearance on The Young and the Restless, the CBS daytime soap that gave him his big break.

Tori Spelling, the next big talk show host? Could be.

– Meanwhile, CBS is reportedly planning a talk show to rival The View, with Big Brother host (and wife of CBS honcho Les Moonves) Julie Chen, Roseanne and The Big Bang Theory star Sara Gilbert, Lisa Rinna and Real Housewives of New York City‘s Bethenny Frankel as panelists/hosts.

– Add I Dream of Jeannie to the list of TV shows being developed as big-screen movies.

– More series renewals: Burn Notice has been renewed for a fifth and sixth season, even though the USA show’s fourth season doesn’t premiere until this summer; NBC has ordered a second season of Parenthood; and Fox has given the thumbs up to a 23rd season of Cops, the network’s second longest-running series.

– TV show premiere dates: Rescue Me‘s sixth and final season debuts on FX on June 29, while Mad Men‘s fourth season will debut on AMC on July 25.

– VH1 has a whopping 44 original series on tap for the rest of this year, including a new installment of Divas, more reality programming with Dr. Drew (how does this guy have time to live his own life when he’s so all up in the Kool-Aid of others’?), documentaries on 50 Cent and Rush, more installments of Behind the Music, and a reality show about Eva Longoria-Parker‘s L.A. restaurant Beso.

– According to a Lady Gaga Tweet, she’ll be performing on American Idol on May 5.

– And NBC reportedly wanted the Website AshleyMadison.com – the Website that encourages infidelity – to advertise during Jerry Seinfeld‘s The Marriage Ref. It might sound outrageous initially, but this is a show where the likes of Madonna is giving marital advice, so … maybe kinda fitting.

Channel Surfing – March 1, 2010

All the tube news that’s fit to surf …

– He’s back: Jay Leno hosts his first Tonight Show since the Conan O’Brien debacle tonight, with guests Jamie Foxx, Brad Paisley and Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn.

– Sorry, Joe Flanigan fans; the star of The Rockford Files remake has been cast, and it’s big-screen vet Dermot Mulroney. Not a name I ever would have thought of for the show, but an interesting choice, no?

– Rumors say Anderson Cooper may be headed to CBS, but his “people” say it’s not true that he’ll replace Katie Couric as the CBS evening news anchor.

– During tonight’s season finale of The Bachelor (8PM ET), ABC will announce the cast of the next Dancing With the Stars season, which premieres on March 22. I may actually have to watch if it’s true that Beverly Hills 90210 diva Shannen Doherty is among the new D-list hoofers.

Snoop Dogg on One Life to Live, James Franco on General Hospital and now, Julianne Moore may make an appearance on As the World Turns, the show that helped launch her career, before the CBS soap ends next fall.

– The cast of Glee is indeed embarking on that rumored concert tour, with stops in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Phoenix.

The Office funny guy Craig Robinson will be the new host of Last Comic Standing when it returns to NBC this summer.

– Marcia, Marcia, Marcia … because she and Jan, a.k.a. Brady Bunch stars Maureen McCormick and Eve Plumb, are still fighting, a planned Bunch reunion that was scheduled to happen this week is a no-go.

American Idol season five alum Elliott Yamin – my all-time fave AI contestant – has been updating via Twitter about his experience being trapped in Chile after last Saturday’s earthquake.

– A Lost-themed amusement park attraction? It might actually happen.

– More Lost news: John Locke and creepy Ben as hit men? It’s a brilliant idea that Lost Emmy winner Terry O’Quinn is shopping, a drama about a pair of hit men who live in the suburbs. The show would star O’Quinn and fellow Lostie (and fellow Emmy winner) Michael Emerson, a duo that’s been responsible for a big chunk of Lost‘s most memorable moments in the last few seasons.

Zooey Deschanel is joining her Bones sister Emily Deschanel as a primetime star. Zooey will star in HBO’s series adaptation of Pamela Des Barres‘ famous band groupie memoir I’m With the Band.

– The new Doctor Who – with Matt Smith as the new Doctor – will debut on BBC America on April 17.

– Will Johnny Depp make a cameo in the upcoming 21 Jump Street movie? He tells Entertainment Weekly he hopes to, which just adds some points to his already full cup o’ coolness.

Saturday Night Live hosts and musical guests for March: Zach Galifianakis and Vampire Weekend on March 6, and Jude Law and Pearl Jam on March 13.

George Lopez is starring in a big-screen, live-action/CGI SpeedyGonzalez movie , and he says it won’t feature the stereotype-projecting Speedy of the original 1950s cartoons.

– And, though viewers seem to love the guilty pleasure aspects of kiddie beauty pageant shows like Little Miss Perfect and Toddlers & Tiaras, not so much for grown-up beauty contests: the Miss America pageant has yet again found itself homeless, as TLC has dropped the annual event from its primetime plans.
