Adam Lambert, The Fallout Continues: Goodbye ABC, Hello CBS

Well, if American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert is operating via the “no publicity is bad publicity” philosophy, he’s gotta be happy with the results so far. What’s happening in Lambertland since that controversial – and how! – American Music Awards performance on Sunday night, in which the rowdy rocker kissed a dude, led another pair around on a leash and simulated oral sex with another? A rundown:

– The AMA telecast drew its largest audience since 2002, with 14.2 million viewers. And despite the post-show reviews, just imagine how high that number would have gone if people had known what Lambert had planned … don’t lie – you would have made a point of watching it, right?

– ABC reportedly received 1,500 viewer complaints about Lambert’s number, though Ad Age points out that a source says the network gets that many complaints and more about Dancing With the Stars.

Good Morning, America, which, like the AMA telecast, airs on ABC, has canceled a live Wednesday morning performance by the rocker.

– CBS’ Early Show will host a Lambert performance instead on Wednesday morning, and will also interview him about the AMA controversy. NBC’s Today Show is reportedly interested in booking him, too, and he pre-taped a performance for The Late Show with David Letterman‘s Wednesday night episode.

– Lambert is also scheduled for a performance and sitdown with Ellen DeGeneres on the Dec. 1 episode of her daily talk show.

– Lambert’s response to the response to his performance: “You know honestly, if I offended some people … it’s apples and oranges. I’m not an artist that does things for every single person,” he said on Access Hollywood. “I believe in artistic freedom and expression, I believe in honoring the lyrics of a song, and those lyrics aren’t really for everybody either.” The openly gay singer also suggested that ABC’s decision to edit the performance for West Coast broadcast is tantamount to discrimination. “There’s a big double standard. Female pop artists have been doing things provocative like that for years, and the fact that I’m a male, and I’ll be edited and discriminated against could be a problem. People are scared and it’s really sad. I just wish people could open their minds up and enjoy things. It’s all for a laugh; it’s really not that big of a deal.”

So, bottom line, is the fallout from his AMA performance ultimately going to be good or bad for Adam Lambert? I think it might have hurt his chances for a certain amount of mainstream success, but given that he’s obviously committed to his over-the-top performances, glam rock duds and ‘dos and his theatrical flair, his fan base may be pretty set already. Prolly definitely not winning over the Christian rock fans at this point, though …

But let’s hear your thoughts on the topic; did Lambert blow a huge opportunity with his AMA antics? Or is he one very savvy entertainer who wanted to set forth his agenda once and for all? Will you, or have you, bought his debut album? Did you plan to buy it before the AMA hubbub?
