Potts Picks: Today’s Best TV – July 12, 2011


The X Factor
– You know, that little TV show where Simon Cowell‘s going to give away $5 million? It’s getting some sort of preview during tonight’s MLB All-Star game, so stay tuned, or DVR the game.

Major League Baseball All-Star Game
– Last year’s game was the least watched All-Star Game telecast ever, so … nowhere to go but up, as the American League tries to take back the title after the National League broke the AL’s seven-game winning streak in 2010.

Pretty Little Liars
– Aria and Ezra try to deal with going public with their fling, while Emily worries that she and her buds are still in danger, Hanna gets to know Caleb better when his foster mom arrives and Spencer gets support from the most unexpected source: her ‘rents.

White Collar
– Neal’s torn: should he help the very talented teen con artist who’s making his mark throughout Manhattan, or should he stop the Neal-in-training in his tracks?

– Tonight’s cheftestants: Four British foodies, who have to work with, among other ingredients, British biscuits, a Japanese snack food and a staple of American cooking.

How the States Got Their Shapes
– The finale considers the influence of words and people’s accents on how states like New York and California.

Teen Mom
– Tonight’s theme: cohabitation, as Gary and Amber move in together (again), Maci considers asking Kyle to move in with her and Bentley for financial reasons and Tyler‘s mom is unhappy about his decision to live with Catelynn.

– Four past champs compete with each other to make treats for the Tony Awards on Cupcake Wars (8PM, Food Network);
– A Philly crepes truck is featured on the 1st season finale of Eat St. (8PM, Cooking Channel);

– The team is back together … no matter how Peter and Neal may feel about that. The guys have to put their differences aside, however, as they’re teamed up to catch a thief who robbed the Federal Reserve.

Inside the Actors Studio
James Lipton unleashes his big list o’ questions on the cast of Modern Family.

The Looney Tunes Show
– Daffy’s big class reunion is coming up, and he wants Bugs to help him with some serious makeover projects.

The Voice
– The quarterfinals kick off, which means the top singers from each team will be pitted against each other. Any predictions? Is Javier Colon a lock? Maybe Nakia? Frenchie Davis?

10PM | MTV
16 & Pregnant
– Mommy-to-be Kianna thinks adoption may be the best option for her child and herself, but she’s getting all kinds of flack for even considering it, from her ‘rents and her babydaddy.

– Canned fruit and seafood … together again.

Covert Affairs
– Ben returns to D.C., but then disappears, while Annie (my fellow Ohio University alum Piper Perabo) is assigned to protect a Russian tennis player who’s also an asset.

How the States Got Their Shapes
– Nevada, Florida and Missouri are among the states included in this installment, which examines how fringe areas of the country affected – everybody say it now – how the states got their shapes (hosted by yet another Ohio University alum, Brian Unger).

– The fun series that chronicles our pop culture obsessions returns with an episode devoted to “Street Eats,” the best food trucks from across the country.

Sports Show With Norm Macdonald
– Don’t worry, he’ll be back. But in the first season finale, Norm visits the Nitro Circus show in Vegas, and tries to become a mascot.

The Voice
– If you missed last week’s premiere, it’s not too late to get in on the fun of this latest reality singing competition, as round two of the blind auditions kick off and the mentors – Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera – continue to battle it out to entice the most talented singers onto their teams.

– Sue teaches everyone about the power of the press when she takes over the school newspaper and prints some veeeery interesting stories.

The Looney Tunes Show
– Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are back in this Looney revamp, which finds the two living in the suburbs as neighbors with other Looney Tunes cohorts, like Marvin the Martian and Yosemite Sam. PS – Check out my list of the top 10 best classic Looney Tunes ‘toons ever, at TV Squad.

– Flashback time! When Tony’s former partner is murdered, he remembers his early time in Baltimore, including his first meeting with Gibbs.

Raising Hope
– Anytime the episode is Burt-centric, meaning we get a bigger than usual dose of star Garret Dillahunt‘s comedic skills, it’s a good thing. Tonight, we find out that Burt is quite skilled at flirting.

10PM | MTV
16 & Pregnant
Jamie is a straight-A student who not only finds herself pregnant, but who is also stuck with a babydaddy she’s trying to mold into being the kind of dad she never had.

– In the mystery basket: beef and chocolate frosting … that’s in the entree basket.

The Good Wife
– Oh, it’s on: Alicia confronts Kalinda about the Peter affair.

How the States Got Their Shapes
– In this fun new series (hosted by my fellow Ohio University alum Brian Unger – go Bobcats!), the title is literal, as in the premiere, where we find out how water played a major role in How the States Got Their Shapes.

My Life as Liz
– Louis has some surprising news for Liz, while Bryson finally has to face up to his feelings for the one he let get away.
