Potts Picks: Today’s Best TV – August 11, 2011

(ALL TIMES ET)

9PM | USA
Burn Notice
– Michael teams up with Jesse (aren’t you kinda missing him with his significantly less screen time this season?) for an extraction mission in the Caribbean, but when they get trapped there by mercenaries, Fiona has to ask a favor of her ex-boyfriend to secure their release. And her ex? He looks like Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale. Because he is.

8PM | FOX – 8TH SEASON FINALE
So You Think You Can Dance
Marko, Melanie, Sasha or Tadd? A winner is chosen in tonight’s season finale.

9PM | LIFETIME
Project Runway
Kim Kardashian is the guest judge as the designers have to whip up frocks for models walking on stilts. With all that extra fabric, you know who the real winner is? Mood!

10PM | MTV
Jersey Shore
– Prepare for the Jerseyites to outskank even their skankiest moments when Ronnie and Sammi try to become friends again, but give in to old habits instead, while The Situation tries to become more than friends with Snooki and Deena tries hard to make the same happen with Pauly D.

10PM | FX
Wilfred
Nestor Carbonell – who uttered one of my all-time favorite TV quotes (“Batmanuel is mired in litigation”) on The Tick – guest stars as Ryan’s sister’s boss, but the best moment in tonight’s episode comes when Wilfred confronts Ryan with his discovery that Ryan had another dog in his life before Wilfred.

10:30PM | LIFETIME – SERIES PREMIERE
Russian Dolls
– Or, The Real Housewives of Brighton Beach. Either way, this latest RH wannabe is neither so juicy it’s entertaining, or so over-the-top bad that it’s worthy of a guilty-pleasure season pass. Still, you should see it, at least once, for yourself.

11:59PM | ADULT SWIM
Children’s Hospital
Nick Kroll is Dr. Velam Geza, who teaches the staff what it’s like to work the night shift.

12:15AM FRIDAY | ADULT SWIM
NTSF: SD: SUV
Adam Scott, Party Down and Parks and Recreation cool dude, guest stars as Trent is suspended and forced to spend time at home, where he’s the target of a planned terrorist attack.

Worth flipping to during commercials:
– It’s eviction night on Big Brother (8PM, CBS);
– New Wipeout on ABC (8PM);
– Jenna and KC have to deal with a visit from Child Services after the baby’s accident on Degrassi (9PM, TeenNick);
– Fry has daddy issues when an alien egg he’s caring for hatches into a big bad monster on Futurama (10PM, Comedy Central);
– Anxious Louis makes a mistake while working with Harvey on Suits (10PM, USA);
– Back-to-back episodes of Louie on FX (10:30 and 11PM).

And the late-night line-up:
Conan (11PM, TBS): Aziz Ansari;
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (11PM, Comedy Central): Michael Wallis;
The Colbert Report (11:30PM, Comedy Central): Gloria Steinem;
The Late Show with David Letterman (11:35PM, CBS): Jim Parsons (REPEAT);
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (11:35PM, NBC): Sam Worthington;
Lopez Tonight (Midnight, TBS): SERIES FINALE;
Jimmy Kimmel Live (12:05AM, ABC): Olivia Wilde;
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (12:35AM, NBC): Emma Stone;
The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (12:37AM, CBS): Geoffrey Rush (REPEAT);
Last Call with Carson Daly (1:35AM, NBC): Gale Anne Hurd (REPEAT).

Potts Picks: Today’s Best TV – August 4, 2011

(ALL TIMES ET)

10PM | MTV – 4TH SEASON PREMIERE
Jersey Shore
– The network is promising that the new season’s new hookups are going to prove to be more shocking than the culture differences Snooki and the gang experience when they head to Florence, Italy. But honestly … whatever guilty, guilty pleasure we may still be able to wring out of watching these idiots continue to kill off their brain cells, do you really think you could be shocked by anything they do at this point?

9PM | USA
Burn Notice
– While Fi and Jesse keep their eye on a guy who may be the answer to solving the mystery of Max’s murder, Michael and Sam try to rescue a sick boy from his father, who’s hidden him away at an armed compound.

9PM | LIFETIME
Project Runway
– The designers have to use items they find in a pet store to whip up some – wait for it – fetching outfits.

9PM | DISCOVERY – SHARK WEEK PREMIERE
Shark City
– Shark Week host Andy Samberg provides commentary during this special, which tracks sharks in the Bahamas to see how they spend their days and nights.

10PM | COMEDY CENTRAL
Futurama
– Let other networks hunt sharks … Leela’s obsessed with tracking down a four-dimensional space whale.

10PM | DISCOVERY – SHARK WEEK PREMIERE
When Fish Attack 3
– By “fish,” they really mean giant people-chomping whales.

10PM | FX
Wilfred
– The episode’s called “Pride,” but it’s also all about love, as Wilfred pursues his new puppy love interest and Jane Kaczmarek plays a woman with a thang for Ryan.

11:59PM | ADULT SWIM
Childrens Hospital
Alicia Silverstone guest stars as Owen’s secret wife. Who’s not such a secret any more.

12:15AM FRIDAY | ADULT SWIM
NTSF:SD:SUV
– Trent’s (Paul Scheer) ex returns a changed person … literally. Meanwhile, no one reads the book Piper has selected for the book club.

Worth flipping to during commercials:
Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman visit The View (11AM, ABC);
– The final six is cut to a final four on So You Think You Can Dance (8PM, Fox);
– As if the challenges weren’t, uh, challenging enough, tonight’s Wipeout (8PM, ABC) finds the contestants being forced to wear potato sacks during the game;
– It’s eviction night on Big Brother (9PM, CBS);
– On Degrassi (9PM, TeenNick), Drew wants to return to his old school, but he’s afraid to leave Adam behind;
– It’s the Happy Days episode (10PM, The Hub) that introduces Robin Williams as Mork from Ork;
– On Suits (10PM, USA), Harvey’s past with another attorney may hurt his current project, fostering the merger of two hotel chains;
Dane Cook and Bob Saget guest star as themselves on Louie (10:30PM, FX).

And the late-night line-up:
Conan (11PM, TBS): Jason Bateman;
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (11PM, Comedy Central): Dick Durbin;
The Colbert Report (11:30PM, Comedy Central): Anthony Bourdain;
The Late Show with David Letterman (11:35PM, CBS): Colin Farrell;
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (11:35PM, NBC): Roseanne Barr and Jason Momoa;
Lopez Tonight (Midnight, TBS): Nicole Scherzinger and Hank Azaria;
Jimmy Kimmel Live (12:05AM, ABC): Jeremy Piven and Denise Richards;
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (12:35AM, NBC): Ryan Reynolds and Fountains of Wayne;
The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (12:37AM, CBS): Craig visits the Palace of Versailles;
Last Call with Carson Daly (1:35AM, NBC): Matt & Kim.

‘Project Runway’: Hey Now, You’re an All-Star

As if a new season of Project Runway (FINALLY!) weren’t enough, Lifetime has announced a two-hour Project Runway: All-Star Challenge special that will air on Aug. 20 (8PM ET), right before the season six premiere (and Lifetime debut) of Project Runway.

The All-Star edition will feature eight former Runway contestants competing against each other for “bragging rights” and, more importantly, a $100,000 prize. It’ll be a quick competition, obviously, with just two hours, but it should be fun to see the fan favorite designers in one showcase. And those all-stars are:

Daniel Vosovic, Season two
Santino Rice, Season two
Jeffrey Sebelia, Season three
Uli Herzner, Season three
Mychael Knight, Season three
Chris March, Season four
Sweet P, Season four
Korto Momolu, Season five

The Project Runway season premiere follows at 10PM, and that’s followed by Lifetime’s new companion series, Models of the Runway (11PM), which goes backstage with the models who show off the fancy frocks created by the Project Runway contestants. Those models are trying to advance their own careers and win cash and a photo spread in Marie Claire.

So, which show are you looking forward to most? The All-Stars? The weekly return of Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn, Michael Kors and Nina Garcia on Project Runway season six? Or the new Models of the Runway series?

All the tube news that’s fit to surf …

– Memorial Day weekend means TV marathons, and TVGuide.com has a round-up of ’em.

Nurse Jackie, the quirky new nurse dramedy starring Edie “Carmela Soprano” Falco, debuts June 8 on Showtime, but you can watch the first episode now, free, at Sho.com. The password: “shifthappens.”

– Now that the networks have announced their schedules for next season, they have to deal with the dismal stats of the just-concluded 2008/09 season: ratings were down 16 percent.

Don’t read this EW.com story unless you want to know the major twist that will kick off The CW’s remake of Melrose Place in the fall.

– Tonight’s season finales: Starz’ terrific comedies Party Down (10:30PM ET) and Head Case (10PT), which features a funny cameo by Jerry Seinfeld.

– What was missing from the American Idol finale (besides an Adam Lambert win, of course)? A goofy Will Ferrell song that was cut.

Fringe‘s Kirk Acevedo took to his Facebook page earlier this week to say he’d been fired from the show. Not so, says a show producer.

– First Guiding Light is cancelled, and now All My Children killed Stuart Chandler. What is going on in daytime TV?!

– Just when you think you can’t possibly love Neil Patrick Harris more, you find out he has pop-up books in his guest room, Kiehl’s products in the shower and a selection of magazines in his bathroom. NPH!

– And in more things that make perfect sense to me, Project Runway star (and he is the real star of the show) Tim Gunn will become a Marvel Comics superhero.

Channel Surfing – May 7

All the tube news that’s fit to surf …

– I still can’t believe that Adam Lambert‘s sexuality is such an issue … like being gay in the entertainment industry is such a new phenomenon? Or being gay on American Idol for that matter. Whatever. Adam lands a solo cover on the new Entertainment Weekly, even before he wins the show, as “the most exciting American Idol contestant in years.” Can’t argue with that.

– It’s not Project Runway, but the Runway-ish The Fashion Show, which debuts tonight on Bravo (10PM ET), does have the fabulous Isaac Mizrahi.

Grey’s Anatomy airs its 100th episode tonight (ABC, 9PM), and it’s supposed to include a McDreamy/Meredith wedding. Supposed to being the key part of that sentence.

– Even if the Mer/Der wedding does go down, will it be one of the best tube weddings ever? Maybe one of the worst? I countdown a few of each at Hollywood.com today.

– Are you more or less likely to watch the new season of Jon & Kate Plus 8 on May 25, given the whole affair brouhaha?

– Tomorrow’s Good Morning America will feature Diane Sawyer’s interview with Connie Culp, the woman whose face transplant made headlines this week.

Chuck executive producer McG weighs in optimistically to Sci Fi Wire about the show’s chances for a third season on NBC. It’s tough to remember the last time an on-the-bubble series generated as much support and good will as Chuck has, so here’s hoping again that it returns next season.

Seth Green and his Robot Chicken cohorts are bringing another show to Adult Swim.

– Only The Big O could incite riots by trying to give away some damn chicken.

– Is it just me, or do most of the contestants on the new season of The Bachelorette look alike?

– And Simon Cowell reportedly earns $36 million a season for American Idol, while co-judge Paula Abdul nets “just” $2 million. Sounds right to me.

Charlie Sheen, Russell Brand and Louis C.K. are getting most of the attention, but I’m most excited that one of the best new shows of last TV season — Wilfred — returns for its second season on FX tonight (10PM ET). Season one of the series ended with a cliffhanger — had Ryan (Elijah Wood) […]
