Potts Picks: Today’s Best TV – July 8, 2011

(ALL TIMES ET)

10PM | STARZ – SERIES PREMIERE
Torchwood: Miracle Day
– Even if you weren’t a viewer of the original Torchwood, this U.S. remake, which finds Captain Jack Harness (John Barrowman) and company investigating why no one on Earth is dying anymore, will hook you. And Bill Pullman, as convicted rapist/murderer Oswald Danes, who survives an execution and is then set free? Nearly unrecognizable physically, and creepily good as a guy who’s going to prove to be, um, complicated.

8PM | NBC
Friday Night Lights
– I can barely even think or write about this penultimate episode of FNL without tearing up, so be warned that Eric and Tami’s dilemma, Riggins’ reunion with a fellow Panther alum and Grandma Saracen – especially Grandma Saracen – are gonna have you wiping the salty discharge from your eyes, too.

9PM | TRAVEL CHANNEL
Paranormal Challenge
– Host Zak Bagans says the Ohio State Reformatory is one of the most haunted places he’s ever visited. It’s also the prison used in The Shawshank Redemption.

10PM | NAT GEO WILD – SERIES PREMIERE
Killer Shots
– The new series follows wildlife photog Andy Casagrande (how awesome is that name?) as he goes to some dangerous lengths to get the perfect shot. In the opener, he leaves a diving cage to get an up close shark photo.

10PM | TLC – SERIES PREMIERE
Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids
Say Yes to the Dress: It’s not just for bridezillas anymore.

11PM | IFC
Young, Broke & Beautiful
Broke-Ass Stuart visits Boston, where he helps judge a burlesque contest, parties at a steampunk mansion and hangs with some nerdy bikers.

Worth flipping to during commercials:
– The Bob Barker is on the lookout for two missing boats on Whale Wars (9PM, Animal Planet);
– On Outrageous Food (10PM, Food Network), Tom helps make an 800-pound burger at an Oklahoma festival;
Chaz Bono is an interviewee and Ann Coulter is among the roundtable guests on Real Time with Bill Maher (10PM, HBO);
Joel McHale and the gang serve up another bowl of tasty snark on The Soup (10PM, E!).

And the late-night line-up:
The Late Show with David Letterman (11:35PM, CBS): Mark Harmon (REPEAT);
The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (11:35PM, NBC): Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb;
Jimmy Kimmel Live (12:05AM, ABC): Matt Nathanson (REPEAT);
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (12:35AM, NBC): Charlie Day (REPEAT);
The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (12:37AM, CBS): Larry King;
Last Call with Carson Daly (1:35AM, NBC): Thomas Lennon (REPEAT).
